CITYPADS MULTIFAMILY
Inside Info
Tucked into Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, Fremont reimagines what everyday rental living can feel like. Designed by New York–based studio By The Studio, the multifamily building moves away from the predictable language of contemporary apartment developments, favoring instead a warmer, more residential sensibility.
From the moment residents step into the lobby, the atmosphere is intentionally calm and composed. The space is anchored by a palette of layered neutrals, darker tonal contrasts, and tactile materials that immediately soften the typical experience of entering a multifamily building. Rather than relying on overt gestures, the design unfolds quietly—through texture, proportion, and carefully considered material combinations.
Throughout the project, the team focused on creating an environment that feels both refined and approachable. Rich finishes and residential detailing were introduced to give the interiors a sense of depth and permanence, while subtle contrasts between light and dark surfaces create visual rhythm across the spaces.
The design extends beyond aesthetics, responding to the evolving ways people live in their homes. Many of today’s renters use their apartments not only as places to rest but also to host friends, work remotely, and build daily routines. Fremont’s interiors reflect this shift, prioritizing comfort and livability alongside a sense of understated sophistication.
Within the residential units, the material palette continues in a more intimate way. Finishes were selected to feel familiar and grounded—elements that allow residents to personalize their homes while maintaining a cohesive architectural language throughout the building.
The result is a multifamily residence that feels less like a temporary stop and more like a place to settle in. By balancing warmth with restraint, Fremont offers a thoughtful interpretation of contemporary urban living—one that elevates the everyday experience of coming home.
